Many UK Government-originated documents and certificates do not require notarisation before legalisation – if you are in any doubt, please ask me.

If you're ready to proceed

Be ready to provide me with the following:

  1. A copy of the document(s) to be notarised before your appointment, plus any instructions or translations that you have received with it.

  2. Your passport and an up-to-date utility bill or bank statement to prove the identity and residential address of each person signing a document or who asks for it to be notarised.

  3. Confirmation that you have taken legal advice upon the content of the document to be notarised.

I am expected by my Regulator to meet certain professional standards, and I must satisfy myself with the following:

  1. Your identity.

  2. Your legal capacity and your authority to do what is asked of you.

  3. Your understanding and approval of what is being asked of you.

  4. That the documentation is understandable and, where necessary, has been translated or interpreted to you; and whether any interpretation or translation services are required.

  5. Where possible, the document format is acceptable to the receiving country.

  6. That all signatures are signed in my presence.

  7. That all documents are signed of your own free will.

Before our appointment, please check your document thoroughly for any inaccuracies or issues you do not understand, and resolve these with your lawyer.

I will not check your lawyer's work, but I will bring issues to your attention if I notice anything in your document that needs to be corrected.

When we meet for our appointment, you will need:

  • The document to be notarised must be unsigned, as I need to witness your signature(s). Please also ensure that you have already provided me with any instructions that have been provided by your lawyer who prepared the documentation.

  • Photographic ID, e.g. a passport, photographic driving licence or photographic residency card, plus a recent hard copy proof of address.

that it has gone through a process that courts, government departments and other

organisations abroad can accept without having to make any further checks
themselves.
